What is a calamity loan in the Philippines?
A calamity loan is a kind of loan that is provided to victims of calamities like flooding, earthquakes, and typhoons. Being the equator, the Philippines is subject to typhoons and volcanic eruptions. When these natural disasters occur, people lose their properties and even businesses.
Some of them get displaced. It is not unusual for houses to get damaged and crops to die. In worst-case scenarios, their houses collapse, and they lose everything. The government offers loans for people who need help, but only if you could prove that you are a victim. If you can get a calamity loan assistance, your area of residence or business must have been declared to be in a state of calamity.
TAKE NOTE: you have to provide evidence that you are a victim of calamity before you can apply.

GSIS Calamity Loan
The last source of loan you can get from the Philippine government is called the GSIS Calamity Loan program. GSIS is the equivalent of SSS, but only for government employees. Before you can apply for this, you have to prove that you are a government employee.
Here are the requirements:
✔ You must be in active government service;
✔ You must not be on leave without pay, like suspension;
✔ You must not have any criminal charges or any administrative charges;
✔ You must not have debts to the government;
✔ You must be a resident of the area that was declared as under a state of calamity.
Like the SSS Calamity Loan, you have to get a form from the government and fill it out. You have to prepare your barangay clearance stating that you are a resident of the area that was declared to be under a state of calamity. You also need to prepare a document proving that you are in active service to the government office you belong to. You must also prepare valid IDs.
Once you have all of these you have to go to the GSIS office to apply. Once the application is completed, you have to wait for approval. Do not forget to bring your eCard as well. If asked, you can also say that this is an emergency loan. The loan term is up to 3 years. The interest rate varies, but it is surely not bigger than what you will pay if you apply for a loan from a bank.
Alternative to government loans
If you do not qualify for any government calamity loan, one great alternative is Digido. It is a private institution that allows you to file for a loan amount up to ₱25,000 with low interest rate.
Digido is really simple. You just have to go to the website and apply. Of course, you must be a resident of the Philippines to be able to apply. You only need to send a copy of your ID and proof of income.

Conclusion
It is a tough thing to deal with calamities. Your livelihood can be put to a halt, and you will certainly need money to jumpstart the business that has been impacted.
The good thing is that the government provides several options by which you could get help. You can take advantage of the programs of SSS, GSIS, and even PAG-IBIG. If you do not qualify in any of these, you have the option to apply from banks or from Digido.
