What is Postal ID in the Philippines

The postal identity card or postal ID is a form of identification here in the Philippines. It is issued by the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost, or Philippine Post Office).

The postal ID is one of the most popular government IDs because it is easy to acquire and can be used to verify your identity. It is a commonly accepted requirement for other IDs and documents such as passport, driver’s license, NBI clearance, police clearance, etc. This ID is accessible to any Filipino or foreign resident in the Philippines and is particularly beneficial for those who might not have other forms of government ID.

Why you need a Postal ID?

Originally, the Postal ID in the Philippines was primarily designed for postal transactions. Its main purpose was to provide a form of identification for sending and receiving mail and packages through the Philippine Postal System. This was particularly important for transactions requiring proof of identity or verification of the recipient’s address.

Over time, the functionality and acceptance of the Postal ID have significantly expanded. Other uses for a postal ID include:

  • Postal Services: Naturally, it facilitates transactions at post offices, including sending and receiving parcels and letters.
  • Financial services: opening a bank account or e-wallet account, applying for a loan, encashing a check, money remittance, sending or receiving money in money transfer centers, etc.
  • Utilities: electric and water bills, applying for a mobile or internet plan
  • Job Applications: Employers often require a valid ID for job applications, and the Postal ID is accepted for this purpose.
  • Travel: While it is not a travel document, the Postal ID can serve as a form of identification for domestic travel, especially when checking into hotels or receiving parcels and services.
  • Verification for Medical Services: Hospitals and clinics accept it as identification for medical services and transactions.
  • Accessing Social Security Benefits: Utilizing benefits from SSS (Social Security System), PhilHealth (Philippine Health Insurance Corporation), and Pag-IBIG (Home Development Mutual Fund), as well as other government services.
  • Applying for the Postal ID Privilege Program: through this program, you can avail of discounts, product or service upgrades, freebies and other deals from Philpost partner merchants.
  • Application for Other IDs: The Postal ID can also be used as supporting documentation when applying for other government-issued IDs like the Philippine Passport, Police Clearance, and NBI Clearance.

Who can apply for a Postal ID?

In the Philippines, the Postal ID is designed to be accessible to a broad segment of the population, including both Filipino citizens and foreign residents. Here are the groups eligible to apply for a Postal ID:

  • Filipino Citizens: Any Filipino citizen, regardless of age, can apply for a Postal ID. This includes minors, who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the application process. How do I check if a postal ID is legitimate?

Be cautious of scams that claim to offer assistance with Postal ID applications through social media platforms. These schemes might swindle you by imposing undisclosed or additional charges under the pretext of extra fees. In more severe cases, they aim to gather your personal details.

Avoid divulging personal or financial data to unfamiliar individuals, regardless of the medium—be it Facebook, email, phone, or SMS. For a secure Postal ID application, always proceed through official PHLPost offices.

To enhance security measures against fraud, PHLPost has introduced a mobile application capable of authenticating a Postal ID via its integrated QR code.

To verify if a Postal ID is legitimate, follow these steps:

  • Check the Physical Features: Genuine Postal IDs have security features like a QR code, a hologram, and ultraviolet (UV) invisible ink patterns.
  • Download the Postal ID Verification App from Google Play and scan the QR code present on your Postal ID. If your Postal ID was issued by a post office, its authenticity is  guaranteed.

Is Postal ID a valid ID?

Yes, your postal ID is a valid secondary ID. You can use it for government purposes, financial services, utilities and discounts. However, when dealing with banks and lending companies, you will be asked to present a primary ID like a driver’s license or passport.

I would definitely give a five (5) star rating to Digido because for so many times since I started using it last October 30, 2020, it saved me from immediate financial needs. The interest is just right depending on the loan term you choose. This is one of my favorite loan apps so far, it has a much lower interest than other loan apps I've tried. The agents are professional and respectful unlike other loan apps.
