As a country surrounded by large bodies of water, the Philippines needs a strong and capable navy to defend its borders and territories against intrusions coming from the sea. This is where the Philippine Navy comes in. The Navy deploys and manages uniformed personnel for naval operations, as well as guarding our maritime borders. This is a heavy task and the Philippine Navy training is no easy feat.
What is the Philippine Navy?
The Philippine Navy was founded on May 20, 1898. As the naval branch of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Navy has the responsibility to train, organize, equip, develop, and maintain forces for naval and maritime operations, as stated on its website. It also shares the responsibility with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to patrol the country’s maritime borders.
The Navy is currently administered through the Department of National Defense (DND) and has two types of commands: the Philippine Fleet and the Philippine Marine Corps (PMC). It has seven operational commands, five support commands, and nine support units. The chief of the Navy (as Flag Officer-in-Command) is Vice Admiral Adeluis Bordado.
The Navy currently has 24,500 active personnel and 15,000 reserve personnel. Its headquarters are located in the Naval Station Jose Andrada along Roxas Boulevard in the City of Manila.
