What is the SSS Disability Benefit?

The SSS disability benefit is a cash benefit given to SSS members who have a permanent disability, whether partial or total. It can be given as either a monthly pension or a lump sum amount.

To qualify for the SSS disability benefit, you must have paid at least one month’s contribution before the semester of disability.

Who can claim disability benefits?

Members with total or partial permanent disabilities can apply for the SSS disability benefit. These are the lists of disabilities or sickness covered by the SSS.

Total disabilities

– Complete loss of sight of both eyes

– Loss of both limbs above the ankles or wrists

Types of benefits for disabled SSS members

There are two types of SSS disability benefits: monthly pension and lump sum amount.

If you want to apply for the monthly pension, you must have paid at least 36 monthly contributions prior to the semester of disability. If you’re qualified, you will receive a monthly pension plus Php 500 monthly supplemental allowance.

The minimum monthly disability pension is Php 1,000 if you have less than 10 credited years of service (CYS). Your pension will increase to Php 1,200 if you have at least 10 CYS, and Php 2,400 if you have at least 20 CYS. Effective January 2017, you will receive a Php 1,000 additional benefit.

• If you’re a total disability pensioner, you will also receive a 13th month pension payable every December. In addition, your dependents will be given a dependent’s pension worth 10% of the member’s basic monthly pension, or Php 250, whichever is higher.
• If you’re a partial disability pensioner, your 13th month pension will be paid provided that the pension duration is at least 12 months.

On the other hand, you will receive a lump sum amount if you have less than 36 monthly contributions.

You have to prepare the following requirements before you can claim your SSS disability benefit:

1. Accomplished disability claim application form
2. SSS medical certificate accomplished by your physician
3. Any of the following IDs:

• 1 valid primary ID (SSS ID, UMID ID, passport, PRC card, seaman’s book)

7. SS card or E-6 acknowledgement stub with 2 valid IDs
8. Photocopy of any of the following:

• Savings account ATM or passbook
• Validated initial bank deposit slip

How to apply for SSS disability benefits

1. Make sure that you have all the documents needed before applying.
2. Enroll your bank or disbursement account on your my.SSS account.
3. Go to any SSS branch or representative office. Due to the pandemic, applications are done through the dropbox system.
4. If you cannot go to the SSS branch yourself, your representative can file on your behalf.
5. An attending physician will conduct a physical exam and determine if you have to submit additional documents supporting your claim.
6. Wait for 1-2 months for your claim to be processed. Once approved, you will receive a notice of your disability pension amount and how to withdraw it from your bank account.
